CATO, Wis. (WFRV) – One man is dead, and a 13-year-old is hurt after being ejected from their horse-drawn carriage during a crash Sunday morning in Manitowoc County.
According to a release from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 8:55 a.m. to reports of a serious crash involving a vehicle and a horse-drawn carriage on USH 10 east of Maertz Road in the Township of Cato.
Deputies say a 2020 GMC Terrain, driven by a 42-year-old woman from Brillion, and a horse-drawn carriage, operated by a 27-year-old Manitowoc County man, were both headed east on USH 10 when the GMC Terrain crashed into the back of the horse-drawn carriage.

Following the collision, the 27-year-old operator of the horse-drawn carriage and his 13-year-old passenger were ejected.
The 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 13-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital by ambulance to receive medical care for what are considered “serious injuries.”
No other information is available at this time, and the Wisconsin State Patrol is currently conducting a full reconstruction of the crash as an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
